Understanding the PIAT Scoring System

PIAT (Performance Indicators for Ayurveda Teachers) is the official Academic Performance Indicator system for teachers in Government and Aided Ayurveda Colleges under the Directorate of Ayurveda Medical Education, Kerala[cite: 149, 150, 189]. It acts as the standard for both Career Advancement Promotions (CAP) and cadre promotions[cite: 150].

Your performance is calculated annually across three distinct categories[cite: 196, 289, 291]:

  • Category I: Teaching, Learning & Evaluation [cite: 196] - Covers direct teaching, clinical hours, examination duties, and innovative teaching[cite: 203, 204, 205, 207].
  • Category II: Professional Development & Extension [cite: 197] - Covers student co-curricular activities, administrative responsibilities (like HOD or Warden), and professional memberships[cite: 221, 225, 227].
  • Category III: Research & Academic Contributions [cite: 198] - Covers published papers, authored books, sponsored projects, research guidance (MD/PhD), and invited lectures[cite: 231, 234, 236, 237].
The Golden Rule of Eligibility: To be eligible for promotion, you must secure a minimum combined score of 150 points from any two categories (Category I & II, or II & III, or I & III)[cite: 240, 241].

Pro Tips for Faculty

Maximize your API scores and avoid administrative delays by following these strategic tips:

🎯 Mind the "75-Point" Threshold

In Category I (Teaching), you must score a minimum of 75 points[cite: 215]. If your calculated score falls below 75, you will be awarded zero points for the entire category[cite: 216]. Always ensure your direct teaching execution is above 80% to secure the maximum 75 points for that sub-section[cite: 213, 347, 350].

📁 Evidence is Everything

The self-assessment score must be based entirely on objectively verifiable records[cite: 209]. Keep safe custody of university orders, duty certificates, and attendance extracts[cite: 246]. If it isn't documented, it cannot be scored by the Screening Committee.

⏳ The 3-Month Application Rule

Do not wait for your promotion date to pass. You must submit your written application and PBAS Proforma to the college IQAC three months in advance of your due date[cite: 250, 254].

📚 Publication Requirements

For promotion from Level 12 to Associate Professor (Level 13A), you need a minimum of 3 published papers in recognized journals[cite: 168, 170, 171]. From Associate Professor to Professor, you need 5 papers[cite: 177, 181, 182]. Ensure your journals are UGC-notified or Peer-Reviewed[cite: 234].

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Who verifies and finalizes my PIAT scores?

Your performance is initially verified by your Higher Official (HOD or Principal) based on verifiable records[cite: 239, 343]. The final scores are then approved by the Screening cum Evaluation Committee (SEC) or the Screening cum Selection Committee (SSC)[cite: 211, 261].

Q: What happens if I am on Maternity Leave, Study Leave, or Medical Leave during the assessment year?

You will not be put at a disadvantage[cite: 220]. Paid leaves approved by competent authorities are excluded from the grading assessment[cite: 218]. The committee will assess your performance based on your active working duration and extrapolate that score for the entire assessment period[cite: 218, 219].

Q: Is there a maximum cap on the scores I can claim?

Yes, for the first two categories. Category I has a maximum limit of 100 points[cite: 214]. Category II also has an upper limit of 100 points[cite: 88, 228]. Category III has no overall maximum limit, but "Invited Lectures" cannot exceed 20% of the total minimum score fixed for Category III[cite: 238, 241].

Q: I am an Assistant Professor (Stage 1) and I hold a PhD. Do I get extra points?

Yes. Assistant Professors in Stage 1 are awarded an additional 10 points in Category II for possessing a PhD[cite: 228].

Q: What should I do if my promotion is rejected by the committee?

If you do not succeed in the assessment, you can be re-assessed after one year[cite: 257]. If you have a grievance regarding the committee's decision, you can submit an appeal to the Grievance Committee formed by the DAME within 30 days[cite: 269, 270].
